When we first moved into our house there were a lot of things I liked, but the colors of everything were wrong. Nothing matched, everything was just off. The garage doors didn’t match anything, and I’ve wanted to paint them since the day we moved in. I thought there would be a sanding, and priming, and the thought of getting in all the grooves just discouraged me.
I talked to one of my friends, and he said that you just need to pressure wash it, or wipe it down with tsp. You just want to make sure that you get paint that is made to adhere to aluminum. If you go to a paint store, they’ll help you get the right kind.
You can either roll it on, or spray it. If you roll, you have less prep work. But rolling it is slower. If you spray, you have to use plastic and cover anything that might get sprayed. I was surprised how little overspray there was. It was a really still night.
When you spray you want to angle the gun slightly upwards, and slightly downwards when you go down. Doing this will ensure that you get in all the cracks. Once you’re done spraying you want to make sure you haven’t missed anything, and go over it if you have.
From here we just let it dry. Once it’s all dry you open the garage, and remove all the tape and plastic. (hope for no overspray on your house!) Once the door is all the way up, you’ll just hop up on a ladder, and paint the once inch strip that is still the old color. You can use a brush or roller. We used a brush.
I can’t believe how fast and easy this project was. We’ve been in our house for 18 months, and I just wish we had done it sooner. We used 2 gallons of paint, and that was perfect. With everything we spent around $100. (that didn’t include the sprayer, we just got that from my husbands work)
